Why
Sustainability

A green approach represents one of the most relevant factors in shaping both the future of the Planet and the one of businesses. Here are a number of reasons why you should aim for it:

Increasingly stricter regulations

What are the World Goals?

2030 Agenda

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is an action program signed on 25 September 2015 by the Governments of 193 member countries of the United Nations and approved by the UN General Assembly

WORLD GOALS...

The project takes into account the 17 Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs, framed within a broader action program consisting of 169 goals to be achieved in the environmental, economic, social and institutional fields by 2030

...AND EU GOALS

Furthermore, to encourage the fight against climate change, the European Commission has proposed a set of political initiatives aimed at implementing the so-called Green Deal: a pact aimed at reducing 55% of net CO2 emissions compared to 1990 levels by 2030, with the aim of finally achieving climate neutrality in the European continent by 2050

Temperature increase

NIn the decade 2011 - 2020, the average temperature of the Earth was 1.09 °C higher compared to the one recorded in the period between 1850 and 1900. The entire planetary ecosystem, starting from almost all the landmasses, is seriously threatened by warming global

Melting glaciers

Over the past 20 years, the phenomenon of melting glaciers has accelerated on a global scale. 267 billion tons of ice per year are lost every year, with a 130% surge between 2000 and 2019

Rising sea levels

Between 1901 and 2020, due to the global warming, a sea level rise of 20 cm was observed, with an average growth of 1.35 mm/year from 1901 to 1990 and an average growth of 3.7 mm/year between 2006 and 2018. Among the evidence of this phenomenon, which threatens the coasts and most of the islands, we can include the increasingly destructive storm surges

Oceans acidification

The increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is also affecting the balance of marine ecosystems. The oceans, in fact, absorb between a third and a quarter of all CO2 released into the atmosphere each year. At the expense, for example, are the coral reefs whose survival is already jeopardized by the phenomenon of bleaching that certifies their death

Wildfires increase

Wildfires in forests and woods, in the current context of climate change, are a problem destined to worsen in the coming years. We are talking about a phenomenon of enormous size which was the responsible of the destruction of 8.5 million hectars in Europe alone between 2000 and 2017

Desertification

The duration of the drought is linked to changes in average rainfall which in turn changes with global warming. This is why regions that are experiencing a decline in average rainfall (such as the Mediterranean, Central and South America and South Africa) experience and will continue to experience more lasting and frequent droughts

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

What is a carbon neutrality certificate?

The carbon neutrality certificate is a document that certifies the neutral environmental (in terms of carbon) impact condition of a given activity. In few words, the amount of carbon dioxide related to company activities, after applying reduction, removal and/or compensation techniques and strategies, is zero. The carbon neutrality certificate is obtained following an accurate calculation process followed by a verification process aimed at identifying and quantifying CO2 equivalent emissions and planning how to reduce and offset them in order to balance them in their entirety

Is it possible to have environmental consulting without obtaining the carbon neutrality certificate?

Of course! We offer consultancy services in terms of energy and environmental sustainability aimed at energy efficiency, at the training of personnel in sustainability matters and at the development of measurement and mitigation strategies of sources of greenhouse gas emissions. This is done totally independently from obtaining the certificate carbon neutrality

How long does the obtained certificate last?

This process is conducted on an annual basis and therefore the certificate obtained is valid for the entire year considered in the analysis phase

Is it possible to certify only one product or one process?

Yes, in order to certify a given product or process, it is initially necessary to define the system boundaries applicable and related to the given product and/or given service, within which the analysis for the balancing of emissions of CO2in the atmosphere will then occur

How are the emissions for which a company is responsible calculated?

The emissions for which a company is responsible are calculated on an annual basis in the form of tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) representing the unit of measurement that allows the overall weighting of different greenhouse gas emissions with different climate-altering effects. The calculations of the Carbon Footprint are performed according to the guidelines of the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard and the dedicated regulatory standards following recognized scientific principles and well-established methodologies

What are carbon credits?

Carbon credit is a financial unit that represents the removal of one ton of CO2 equivalent from the atmosphere. It represents the emission of greenhouse gases that have been avoided, reduced or sequestered through a project and which can be purchased as a means of offsetting the emissions. Some of the most famous carbon credits are indicated with one of the following abbreviations: VER (Verified Emission Reduction), CER (Certified Emission Reduction) and VCU (Verified Carbon Unit)

How are emissions for which a company is responsible classified?

The emission sources that make up the corporate carbon footprint can be grouped into three macro-classes defined by the GHG Protocol:

  • Scope 1:Direct emissions from installations within the boundaries of the organization due to the use of fossil fuels and the emission of any greenhouse gas into the atmosphere
  • Scope 2: EIndirect emissions deriving from the generation of electricity, heat and steam imported and consumed by the organization
  • Scope 3: Indirect emissions not under the control of the organization due to the activity of the company. That is, emission sources that are not under the direct control of the company, but whose emissions are indirectly due to company activity
